Back to Zumba
I was loving my Zumba class I took a few times a week, and was really starting to see the results. I was stronger, my blood pressure was lower, I had more energy, and I lost 40 pounds. Unfortunately, I started to leak so much urine that I had to quit.
At my next doctor appointment I had gained 15 pounds and my blood pressure went up ten points. I was embarrassed, but I finally told my doctor I stopped working out because of my urinary incontinence. When she sent me to physical therapy to help, I was skeptical. I thought physical therapists treated athletes.
The Athena Physical Therapy (now EvergreenHealth Urology & Urogynecology Care) staff immediately put me at ease. The friendly person who answered the phone told me about their all female staff and clientele. This and the fact that my whole appointment would be with the same physical therapist sold me. I made an appointment.
My physical therapist explained that just like any other muscle my “pee muscles” could be strengthened and this might allow me to exercise again. I was thrilled. We practiced “Kegel” exercise and I found out I was doing them completely wrong. After some practice using biofeedback and with the guidance of my physical therapist I was able to get back to class leak-free in about two months. I’ve lost an additional 20 pounds and was able to go off my blood pressure medication. Thanks Athena Physical Therapy for helping me get back to Zumba!!!
No More Constipation
My life had been controlled for years by my constipation. I had to watch what I ate, when I ate it, and how much I ate. I went to the doctor who told me there were no serious medical issues causing my issue. After some internet research I found out that Athena Physical Therapy might be able to help.
At my consultation my physical therapist asked me very detailed questions about my bowel and drinking habits. She told me I wasn’t drinking nearly enough water. No one ever told me that before.
She also taught me “how to poop” – sounds like something that I should have known, but I also found out I was doing it completely wrong. During our sessions we worked on relaxing my pelvic muscles and she gave me some ideas of foods to eat and avoid.
It’s been over a year and I still can’t believe how much better I feel. I still have to watch what I eat and make sure I drink enough, but the treatment I received really changed my life for the better.
